1. Introduction to Engine Maintenance
The engine is the core power component of all mechanical equipment, known as the “heart” of vehicles, engineering machinery and power equipment. Regular and standardized engine maintenance can effectively reduce component wear, avoid common faults, reduce fuel consumption, stabilize power output, and greatly extend the overall service life of the engine. Neglecting daily maintenance will easily lead to problems such as carbon deposition, oil leakage, power attenuation and even engine scrapping, bringing high maintenance costs and safety hazards.
2. Daily Routine Maintenance
2.1 Engine Oil Inspection & Replacement
Engine oil is the lubricating medium of the engine, undertaking the functions of lubrication, cooling, cleaning, anti-rust and sealing. Users need to check the oil level and quality regularly. The standard oil level should be between the upper and lower scales of the oil dipstick. If the oil becomes black, turbid or thin, it needs to be replaced immediately.
Motor vehicles and small equipment are recommended to replace engine oil every 5,000-10,000 kilometers or 6-12 months; engineering machinery and high-load equipment need to shorten the replacement cycle according to the operating intensity. It is necessary to select engine oil with suitable viscosity and grade that meets the equipment manufacturer’s standards to avoid low-grade oil causing engine wear.
2.2 Coolant Maintenance
Coolant is responsible for adjusting the engine operating temperature, preventing high-temperature scuffing in summer and pipeline freezing and cracking in winter. It is forbidden to use pure water instead of coolant for a long time, as pure water will cause scale precipitation, block the water channel, and corrode the engine cylinder body.
Check the coolant liquid level in the auxiliary water tank regularly, and replenish the same brand and model of coolant in time when the liquid level is low. The coolant replacement cycle is generally 2-3 years or 40,000-60,000 kilometers. Old coolant with deterioration, discoloration and precipitation must be completely replaced to ensure the heat dissipation effect of the engine.
2.3 Air Filter Cleaning & Replacement
The air filter is the “protective mask” of the engine, which filters dust, impurities and particles in the air to prevent them from entering the cylinder and causing wear of pistons and cylinder walls. In dusty working environments, the air filter needs to be cleaned frequently with compressed air.
Under normal use conditions, the air filter is replaced every 10,000-15,000 kilometers; in harsh environments such as construction sites and mining areas, the replacement cycle should be halved. A blocked air filter will lead to insufficient air intake, incomplete fuel combustion, increased carbon deposition, reduced power and increased fuel consumption.
3. Regular Deep Maintenance
3.1 Carbon Deposition Cleaning
Long-term operation of the engine will produce carbon deposition on the throttle, intake manifold, fuel injector and combustion chamber. Excessive carbon deposition will cause unstable idle speed, jitter, weak acceleration and increased exhaust emissions. It is recommended to carry out professional carbon cleaning every 20,000-40,000 kilometers.
Common cleaning methods include physical cleaning and foam carbon removal, which can effectively remove stubborn carbon deposition, restore engine intake efficiency and fuel atomization effect, and make the power output more smooth.
3.2 Spark Plug & Fuel Injector Inspection
The spark plug is the ignition core of the gasoline engine. Aging, ablation and carbon deposition of the spark plug will lead to poor ignition, cylinder misfire and difficulty in starting. It is recommended to replace ordinary spark plugs every 30,000 kilometers and platinum/iridium spark plugs every 80,000-100,000 kilometers.
The fuel injector is a key component for fuel injection. Blocked or worn fuel injectors will cause uneven fuel injection and insufficient power. Regular cleaning and calibration of fuel injectors can ensure sufficient fuel supply and stable engine operation.
3.3 Timing System Inspection
The timing belt/chain is an important part to coordinate the operation of engine components. Once the timing belt breaks or the timing chain jumps teeth, it will cause serious damage to the engine valve and piston. It is necessary to check the tightness and wear of the timing system regularly.
Rubber timing belts are generally replaced every 60,000-80,000 kilometers; metal timing chains have a longer service life and need to be inspected regularly for looseness and abnormal noise to avoid major engine failures.
4. Correct Operation & Maintenance Taboos
4.1 Standard Daily Operation
Do not start the engine with high load immediately after cold start. It is necessary to idle for 30-60 seconds to allow the engine oil to circulate fully and lubricate all components. After high-load operation, do not turn off the engine immediately. Keep idling for 1-2 minutes to cool down the engine to avoid local high-temperature damage.
Avoid long-term low-speed driving and frequent short-distance driving, which will easily lead to insufficient engine combustion and accelerated carbon deposition accumulation.
